The Lemon Book Club - The Alchemist
When we were placed under lockdown here in Italy, and it became clear that it was going to be a long-term situation, I realized I was going to have a lot of time to be alone and to think. The forced stillness gave me the opportunity to reflect on my life: where I have been, where I am, and where I would like to be. I revisited many of my favorite books in this time. One of which is The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho.
The Alchemist is a story about dreams. Even if you don’t know what your dreams are yet. Think of what brings a smile to your face. Deep down, you know there are things that pull on your heart.
I had read this book once before, when setting out on a new journey. It inspired me to trust in the steps I was taking, that they were leading me on a path. Even when I didn’t know the destination. In fact, we can never actually know where the universe will take us next.
I had forgotten most of the story. And it is difficult to say much about the book without giving anything away. It is a good book to read without knowing what will happen. But I will say that this book is about a journey, and while you are reading it, you will reflect on your own life’s journey, too.
When I reached the end, I was amazed. The message of the story is so poignant and touching. I was glad I had not remembered, so that I could experience it again. Now, years after reading it for the first time, it took on an even deeper meaning.
Reading this book again helped me to get out of my head. I tend to get grand ideas about the future and what I have planned for it, but really, I cannot predict what will happen tomorrow. All that is in my control is to identify the purpose I want my life to serve and the things that bring me joy. And to focus my time and energy on them. To trust my intuition when faced with a decision. And to seek out opportunities.
For there are many good things out there, but they are counting on us to be looking for them.
